Genre
Genre means 'type' or 'kind'. Genres make different things whether it be books or films identifiable to an audience. Without different types of genres everything would be the same. Within film, genre allows us as an audience to identify with a typical genre whether it be horror, action or comedy and whether or not we want to watch that type of film as there are typical conventions within each genre for example in a horror you know you are going to be scared no matter what film it is just as long as it is in the 'same' genre.
How Films Are Marketed
There are many ways a film can be marketed/promoted:
- Trailers - Short video of parts of the film to attract viewers to the and make them want to watch
- Film Posters - Posters used to advertise a film and its release date
- Website -
- Social Networking -
- Television and Radio Advertising -
- Merchandise -
Film Marketing
How films are marketed and promoted before its release date goes a long way in determining how successful a film will be. Film marketing involves many different aspects and approaches and whereas some films receive a very high marketing budget other films sometimes receive very little marketing funds but are still able to become successful due to the effectiveness of the marketing. A good example of a film that used a low marketing budget to great effect and become a blockbuster hit was The Blair Witch Project.
Why Audiences Watch Horror
I think that people watch horror films as they enjoy the unknkown and not knowing what is going to happen next. Personally, from watching horror films myself the thrill and excitement has always interested me as well as watching to see if I can tolerate the film without becoming scared myself always seems like a challenge.
